Prof. Dr. iur. Dr. med. Alexander P. F. Ehlers

After his studies of medicine at the universities of Düsseldorf, Heidelberg and Munich, Prof. Dr. iur. Dr. med. Alexander P. F. Ehlers wrote a doctoral thesis on the history of medicine in Central America. While gaining practical experience as a doctor in different positions, Prof. Dr. Dr. Ehlers started studying Law at the Munich University Law School in 1980. In 1983, he started to work on his second thesis on medical law which he finished in summer 1986.

In 1983, he opened his own doctor's office in Munich as a general practitioner. First, he was only caring private patients, in October 1983 he became a panel doctor.

From 1984 to 1987, Prof. Dr. Dr. Ehlers was a civil servant employed by the state government of Bavaria. He worked in several positions with the administrative and judiciary branches of the Bavarian state government. At the same time, while still running his doctor's office, Prof. Dr. Dr. Ehlers gathered experience as an attorney while working for a major Munich law firm specialised in medical malpractice law.

Besides this, Prof. Dr. Dr. Ehlers became assistant professor at the Institute of Criminology at the University of Munich in 1984. His main interest was in the field of medical law. In 1986, he started with his habilitation in the field of medical law. In the winter term 1987/1988 he received his first invitation to lecture on forensic psychiatry. Since the winter term 1988/1989 he has been lecturing regularly on medical law. In the year 2003 he has been appointed honorary professor for medical law and health care systems at the European Business School in Oestrich-Winkel. .

Because of his studies and experience in medical and pharmaceutical law, Prof. Dr. Dr. Ehlers also acts regularly as counsel for the pharmaceutical industry.

From the very beginning, Prof. Dr. Dr. Ehlers has been a member of the first German society for medical law. He is also member and officer of various other professional associations. He is member of the Rotary Club. Prof. Dr. Dr. Ehlers has also published books and articles in periodicals on medical law. He is a co-author of a loose-leaf treatise on medical law which has been published since June 1988.

Prof. Dr. Dr. Ehlers whose mother tongue is German is fluent in English and knows some Spanish.
